Interlude: Links and Adventures in Insomnia

I’ve been battling a resurgence of insomnia lately.  Since the dreaded bout with encephalitic meningitis a few years ago, I periodically go through these phases where I’ll sleep three or four hours a night for a couple of weeks, then more or less physically collapse and catch up on my sleep schedule all at once.  In an effort to short circuit this cycle, I took a sleeping pill last night about 10:00 PM.

The result:  It’s 5:07 PM where I am, and I’ve been awake for all of an hour. Grr.

On the other hand, I am feeling well rested at this particular moment in time, so I’m going to take this moment of clarity to share a couple of interesting links.

First off, a shout out to my FOBL buddy Andy who’s started blogging at One Geek, One Earth, the intrepid adventures of a guy attempting to lower his carbon footprint and do his bit to save the environment.  Given that most of you who know me are aware that I’ve converted my home heating system and my automobiles to run exclusively on the entrails and squeaky little souls of baby seals (that I club to death myself), this would seem like an odd link for me to be pimping.  Chalk it up to my undying affection for Andy.

Second, devoted reader and office hottie Erica sent me a link today for the new U2 movie in 3D which debuts on January 23.  I have to admit that I’m really excited about this — more excited even than I was about Rattle and Hum, which I saw four or five times in the theater back in the day and still own on video cassette.  I am a sucker for all things U2.  Have been since the first time I heard The Unforgettable Fire back in 1984 at the tender age of 13.

And last but not least, science fiction publisher Eos has finally jumped on the free e-book marketing bandwagon (albeit very lightly at this point) to celebrate its 10th anniversary.  They’re giving away copies of Robin Hobb’s Shaman’s Crossing to pump sales for the subsequent two books in that trilogy.  You can read more about it at the Eos blog.  Expect a new release every two months.

That’s what I’ve got today.

D.
