I think this is the biggest rip off in the history of the USA
They say if we don't bail them (who every that is) out then we will hit rock bottm. Hell, I been at rock bottom. And you know what, when your at rock bottom you have something to stand on. And when you have something to stand on then you can stand up and make something for yourself.
FUCK A HAND OUT
FUCK A BAIL OUT
How about a free market? Is a free market a new idea? I just don't get it.
Mad as hell about government and it giving away my hard earned money.

Cryptonomicon is tough to get into (though I might argue the same about any 900 page novel), but it's well worth it.

That novel changed everything I thought I knew about writing.

Ok, I only read his bio on Wikipedia but I'm ready to reserve his newest book.

He was born 10 years - 10 days before me, thus graduated 10 years before me, and if his book release had been Sept 11th, 10 days befor my birthday, I really would've been intrigued,. But who would release a book on Sept 11th?

Cryptonomicon? That's just fun to say.

Will look up Neal Stephenson with great anticipation.
In our family the name Neal is kind of a joke. My mother mistakenly called my husband Neal over the years. Now sometimes when we go on a trip or we're gathering up somewhere, we ask if Neal is in the car.
Sometimes yes, and sometimes he gets left behind.

I'd forgotten about the Chinese dissident angle, even with all the press it got a couple of years ago (leading up to the Olympics). Excellent point, Prof.

Then again, "dissident" isn't even a fair characterization if this wikipedia article is to be believed. Helping to spy on an entire downtrodden population (even inadvertantly) is, indeed, pretty evil.

Of course, the Google-hugger in me says, "That's what they're telling the media. What are they doing behind the scenes to undermine Chinese spying that they can't tell us about because it would compromise their efforts?"

Which goes back to my thesis: I wouldn't think such a bizarrely altruistic thing about any other megacorp. Why does Google get a pass?
